In order to put forth the importance of socially recognizing and legitimizing artists who belong to historically marginalized groups, we included a column with Wikipedia entries referring to each artist mentioned here in the spreadsheet generated in the playlist of each artist.
This project was originally conducted in Portuguese. However, we chose to feature here the links pointing to the English Wikipedia, rather than the Portuguese Wikipedia, as in the original project, to shed light on yet another issue: the scarcity of Brazilian artists on the English Wikipedia.
Do you realize that some people – especially black, trans or artists related to more marginalized musical genres – besides being less frequently recommended, do not have a Wikipedia page? This invisibility in Wikipedia biographies is a reflection of a greater invisibility in society as a whole.
Throughout the research, we identified that, despite Wikipedia being a free encyclopedia, the entries sometimes reproduce an inequality in the production of knowledge that targets especially historically vulnerable populations. In other words, knowledge and information related to black, indigenous and trans populations, for example, are far fewer in number than information about dominant populations and cultures. Throughout the research, we heard from members of the Wiki Movement Brazil community that they often experience difficulties in creating entries related to people belonging to black and indigenous populations due to the absence of sources and notoriety required by the community’s reliability criteria.
In other words: when we talk about artists who belong to these groups, history seems to repeat itself. Here, we see this reproduction through the absence of entries about certain artists. We see that most of the artists without entries belong to historically marginalized groups, both in terms of their social profile and their musical style.
Shall we contribute to change that? We invite you to write entries for artists who are not yet present on Wikipedia!
